More on Miller

I've been skewered by Paul Tuns about my Arthur Miller post below.

Paul's criticisms are unduly harsh. I never expressed support for Miller's politics. I thought his softness on Castro and his conservative-bashing were terrible. (I called his latter day political writing "pretty vexing.") But that doesn't take away from his literary achievements, like writing plays such as Death of a Salesman.

Also, I was not, as Paul wrote, "outraged" by the Globe's headline. I said I was "struck" and "almost offended." Struck because that is what newspapers in this country (and elswhere) have been reduced to -- promoting celebrity everywhere, all the time on Page One. If Miller hadn't been married to Monroe would he even have been placed on the headline banner as he was? Maybe not. And that is sad.

UPDATE: Barbara Kay has an excellent piece on Miller in today's National Post (subscription only).
