I've written before about how good Newt Gingrich has been on foreign policy. (His private life is a different story -- a complete disgrace.) I wans't ware that the former House speaker is leading congressional task force on U.N. Reform with former Sen. George Mitchell. That's great news. And, true to form, Newt's already on fire:
"I intend to bring with me into the room one simple premise," Gingrich said. "Any organization that permits Sudan to join its human rights commission while investigating genocide in that country is in need of profound and fundamental reform."
And, Gingrich added, it is up to the United States to ensure that reform is considered and enacted because other members of the U.N. security council member nations are not up to the challenge. "Oil matters more to France and China that human rights in Darfour," the region of Sudan where the genocide has occurred. "They want to have the oil more than they want to see human rights respected. We in the United States need to say that loudly and publicly all around the world."
I still have major problems with Newt (if only he could bring this kind of moral clarity to his personal life!) but no other political personality has made more sense on international affairs since 9/11.
