The Martin government has announced that Canada is sending peacekeeping troops to Sudan by the end of the summer.
Gotta love how this CBC story only at the very end mentions the fact that (now) Independent MP David Kilgour, the strongest proponent of Canadian action in Sudan, met with Martin this week about this issue. The two last paragraphs:
Martin met earlier this week with David Kilgour, a former Liberal MP who now sits as an independent.
Kilgour is a strong proponent of sending Canadian troops to Darfur. Kilgour and the prime minister denied the meeting was an attempt to prop up the Liberals' shaky minority government.
Please. It's totally obvious this was done to buy off Kilgour's vote on the budget. The Prime Minister will go as far as to send our troops into harm's way to get an extra vote in the House.
I personally support the deployment, but am sickened that it took the threat of his government collapsing for Martin to do the right thing.
