Monday thoughts

  • Joseph Lavoie, a Tory blogger, won The Next Great Prime Minister TV show, televised last night on the CBC. That makes two Conservatives in a row, as last year, Deirdra McCracken, now press secretary to Minister Jim Prentice, took the title. There are many reasons to rejoice about this -- not the least of which is that it must be driving the CBC nuts. But it was particularly gratifying to see Joseph, who had been trailing in the audience polls for most of the show, pull ahead and eventually win based on his answer to a question from Kim Campbell that he would absolutely NOT entertain the idea of overriding the democratic process to appoint women and minorities in riding nominations. Way to go Joseph.
  • Anyone following the Black trial and who wants information OTHER than what Barbara Amiel is wearing -- ie. if you want straight fact-based observations and commentary on the actual trial that is taking place -- should visit here for what seems to be a fair and balanced viewpoint. Mr. Skurka is sitting through the entire trial and reporting for CTV and other news outlets.
  • On the budget. Of course there's too much spending. There's too much top-down control and coercion, especially in the environmental area. It would have been better to adopt a more incentives-based approach. In that respect it is disappointing. But the tax cuts are good. I give it a 6/10.
