An improbable end

The media infatuation with Barack Obama tonight was so over the top -- almost ridiculous. "We haven't seen a public speaker like this since Reagan," said David Gergen of the nominee-to-be. The Clintons suffer from "a deranged narcissism" said CNN hack Jeffrey Toobin. (Chris Matthews of MSNBC was still worse.) The Queen is dead -- long live the King!

We'll see. There is no doubt that the contrast between the two candidates' styles couldn't be much more pronounced, but November is still a long time away. We have no idea how things will pan out, but I wouldn't be surprised if the fall election is even closer than 2000, with a possible repeat situation of the popular vote going to one candidate and the electoral college win to the other.

Yes, it is an important evening. A giant has been slain. Virtually no one, myself included, thought he could take down the Clinton machine -- a machine as well oiled as the Western world has ever seen. Anyone still clinging to the tired myth that America is a racist country can no longer claim to be serious. Obama inspires a lot of people (I'm still trying to understand why) and has brought a lot of new people into the political process.

I actually thought Hillary's speech was OK, despite the media pile-on. She is the most resilient woman in the history of our modern politics and her refusal to give up and tough it out until the end was admirable. We'll see what she does now, but I wouldn't be surprised to see her in the #2 spot.
